Where the number comes from

The US Census Bureau and HUD ask homeowners about their home improvements in the American Housing Survey. In the 2023 survey, homeowners reported 8.3 million roofing projects and $93.5 billion in roofing spending for 2021–2023. The median roofing job cost $10,000, the highest of any project type in the survey.

The survey covers about two years. So the clock uses $93.5 billion ÷ 2 = $46.75 billion a year. That is $1,481 a second, and 4.15 million roof jobs a year. It is an average pace, not a live feed. Real spending rises after storm seasons and falls in winter.
